Variable Power Supply for Electrolysis

I've been searching for a variable power supply to use with an electrolysis setup. I figured that with a variable power supply, you could use it for everything from coins to larger relics. Found a few on E-Bay, but most are going to be close to $100 with shipping. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

I have a variable power supply built by a friend many years ago.
Turn the knob and it will go from 0 to 13.5 volts and anywhere in between.
Have bought several like this from other places, but this is not what you need.
I think you need to vary the amps and not the voltage.
Perhaps a car battery charger for $30 and a rheostat might work double duty.
Not sure but maybe one of those house light switches rated for 120v would work.
They are a variable resistor but do not show exactly how much current is flowing.
