Opinion on a 2 cent piece
I don't know anything about grading or value. I have taken stripped buffalo nickels and had them replated with silver and made into necklaces knowing that they were not worth much when I did it (no holes drilled, ring clasps). I got this two cent piece that I know a grade could make a difference between a 30-40 dollar coin and a 60-100 dollar coin. Anyone got any clues here? And if I do have this one plated will I be decreasing it's value? Or should I just have it set into a clasp to hang from a necklace?

Re: Opinion on a 2 cent piece
No way man! I would never do it myself! I had the nickels professionally done. They were stripped from years of erosion in the ground, but the features popped when I had them plated. I spent about 40 bucks to have them plated and another 40 for the clasp and I gave it to my sis for an heirloom (It was one of my gpas finds with his old coinmaster 4)
There is almost no erosion on this baby. The detector read 0" and it was on top of the dirt but underneath some pine needles. i don't know much about it but if there is any chance I might hurt the coins value I will just have it set in the clasp...maybe I can find someone that will make one out of copper to match the coin. The pictures don't do it justice either. It has a really nice deep deep green patina

Re: Opinion on a 2 cent piece
the details on that coin are very crisp.is that dirt or stains on the coin? im no coin grader but if i were to try i would have to say its at least XF. i wouldnt plate it or put it into jewelry. id leave it just as it is. as far as i can tell in XF condition its about a $40 coin.

Re: Opinion on a 2 cent piece
Nope. Dirt. It's been soaking in olive oil and most of the dirt has been removed, but I didn't want to rub it to take care of the little bit left.

You could have it mounted in such a way as not to detract from the value. But let someone who has experience do it for you. The coin itself is a common date but the condition is super. I would grade it VF.

Okay, Maybe XF. The "We" is very strong.
I'm no grading expert either. I would be proud to have that in my collection.

That coin would grade at least VF-20,Worth at least 30.00 Red Book value. 40.00 in EF-40.

Re: Opinion on a 2 cent piece
Very cool. It was my first good find. My gpa used to coinshoot with a coinmaster 4 and he used to take me along. I used to walk with him for hours and just watch. It's unfortunate it took his passing to get me to pick up a detector. He would have gotten real excited about the coin.

...I think one grade higher there mountainman and it's an 80 dollar coin. If it had the fancy 5 it might be worth twice that.

I wouldn't put that coin in a clasp either. It will just cause it to get worn from wearing it, etc. Put it in a 2x2 and keep the value of it.
Great find! I would love to find one!

I found it on a hiking trail. The trail has been in use as such since the early 1800s.

Re: Opinion on a 2 cent piece
I was looking at a 2005 Redbook ,the value may have gone up since then. That is the finest example of a dug two cent piece that I've ever seen.Congrads.

Re: Opinion on a 2 cent piece
Thanks! How much is it to have these things graded? If it is nice enough one of those non-PVC plates with the grade at the top would be nice.

Re: Opinion on a 2 cent piece
Sorry,I don't know how much it costs to slab a coin.It may not be worth it unless the coin was somewhat rare, I think it's fairly expensive.Just my opinion though.

Re: Opinion on a 2 cent piece
The sheaths of wheat, the bow, the WE, the lines on the shield are all sharp- this coins IS for certain at least XF, it may grade AU. NICE- I wouldn't put that in a necklace if you paid me.. oils from the skin will get on it.. scratches... man, I would be more than content to put it in my coin collection.
