Update on What to Clean Coins With .....

o.k. so after some suggestion I tried runnin my tumbler with straight vinegar. 1st i made the mistake of runnin it with copper and clad mixed. shortly after i saw a reply that said not to do this as it will turn the clad a funky bronze color ..... it did !

next i tried running straight vinegar with my clad - it turned my clad GREEN !! did i do something wrong ??

then i ran my copper with straight vinegar and very very pleased with those results. the vinegar appearently ate away 98% of the corrosion and left a nice sheen.

any comments about the green clad would be appreciated !!

    thanks !!!!!

I would say not to use viniger with clad. I can't tell you why it turned green. Good advice on the copper, I'll try vinigar next time I tumble copper/zinc. I always cleaned my clad with aquarium gravel and dishwashing detergent (small amount). Works pretty good.

I've never tried vinegar, so I can't help you with the coloring. However, I can give you a recipe that works well with any clad. I use aquarium gravel, warm water, and about a teaspoon of dish soap. Someone also suggested a pinch of sand with this mixture and I liked the results. Tumble for 2-3 hours and you will have some ready to spend clad.

Some of the really badly corroded coins will need a second tumble, and remember not to mix copper with silver clad. Good luck.
