Dug a pretty old English coin with word Britannia on it. Coin so worn I thought it was a metal slug originally! After chipping crud off with finger saw the word britannia and a seated figure on the coin. Problem is that much of the other info can not be read. I can only make out the word and figure if the coin is wet. In this condition coin is obviously not valuable but I am very curious to get a date. Any suggestions - had anyone ever tried a rubbing on a coin to raise the info. Is there a better way to clean it? I'm afraid if I clean it too much with an abrasive bases material it will just erode the info on the coin more. Open to any suggestions.
