Preserving Buttons: What is the best method to preserve wire shanks?

I recently found some tombacs in amazing shape. The only issue with them is the iron wire shank which, I know from past experience, become brittle with time.

I thought I remember someone suggesting Elmer's Glue or something like that. Any help is appreciated.
