Tumbled Clad, Pics, Recipe....Edit: Wheats Added....2nd Edit: Bullets and
Besides pennies most of the times I just put dirty coins in the vending machines at work. Sometimes I tumble them. Here is my recipe:
I charge the tumbler vessel with one big handful of coins, 2 handfuls of white aquarium gravel, 1 handful of Pool Filter sand, 1 tablespoon of household ammonia, 1 teaspoon of dishwashing soap. Cover continence with water, close and tumbler for 2 to 3 hours. I posted a picture that shows how I use a net trash basket to catch the cleaned coins and a colander strainer to catch the gravel.
Notes:
Always tumble silver colored coins separately from pennies, never tumble key coins.
The sand I use is Pool Filter sand, it comes in a large bag, doesn't cost very much. It can be got from a hardware store, I got mine from Ace. Pool sand has a consistant grit/aggregate.

Ant, I get similiar results with just water, gravel and a couple of drops of dish washing detergent. I tumble them for an hour to two hours at a time. Just made $29 the other day from clad. Comes in handy.

Hey Ant, can you clarify the above qoute, where you say tumble like colored coins. Are you referring to Nickel, Dimes and Quarters with reddish tints to be tumbled separately from other silver coins?
Thanks for the recipe; my new tumbler is on the way

I mean tumble all silver colored coins together, no matter what color they are when you start. The same goes for copper coins. Just like it shows in my before and after pictures.

Thanks Ant for clarifying that.
Used mine for the first time yesterday, using a friend's recipe with only one handful of aqaurium gravel and dish soap. Wasn't too impressed after 3 hour tumble. Appears it needs at least that extra handful of gravel, to say the least.

Yeah that wasn't to clear, sorry.
I've tried 5 or 6 different ways and for me, this one worked the best and fastest. The sand make a huge difference, but too much will ware the coins down and make give them a satin finish.
The sand I use is Pool Filter sand, it comes in a large bag, doesn't cost very much. It can be got from a hardware store, I got mine from Ace. I'll edit that and stipulate that in the recipe. The ammonia makes a big difference too.

Re: Tumbled a little clad today, before and after pictures and the recipe.
I wanted to add these 23 none key wheat pennies that I cleaned using the same recipe. I added them to a batch of zinks I was cleaning. These 23 wheats knocked me over the 50 mark, now I'm working on 100.

I just can't beleive it! It's so easy that way of cleaning the coins. Great idea. I've tryed it on thousand of coins founded in the sea and it came out pretty good.
I'm wondering if it would work by using a kind of washing machine just added with sans and no water ?

Ant.. It looks as though most of your coins come from soil hunting (brown tint).
Will the cleaning method work as well with salt corrosion?

Hi gold-digger.
Yes, it'll work on saltwater corroded coins as far a cleaning goes. I use a cheap Harbor Freight rock tumbler, $20.00. And when the pulley belt went kaput I replaced it with a large o-ring and its' been going strong ever sense.
