Proper way to clean (or not clean) coins found in the ground

I am about to get my 1st detector and I know you do not want to ruin old coins by cleaning them too much or they lose their value.

What is the proper way to clean an old coin and still preserve the patina without causing any damage?

Pretty much, personally if I did coin detect I would leave them alone but whatever you like to do is cool, this guy wrote a good article on preserving relics:

Great question! Here are some answers.

Silver coins, don't rub them or try to remove the dirt in the field, except by blasting it with water (TOUCHLESS!)
I detail the silver cleaning method here about 3 minutes into this video:



If it is a large cent or other copper coin, this topic will give you excellent ideas:

How did you dry you seated? Just leave it sit out? I would think during it off with a towel might scratch it. Thanks for sharing and that's a beautiful coin.
