Need advice for removing crust from iron artifact

Of course I'm not positive what this is but I have a pretty good feeling it's part of a flintlock pistol.
Based on where it was found and other artifacts associated with it.
This is all sand that has adhered to the iron.
I've removed this from other objects with a more smooth surface by simply tapping with a hammer and picking it away. I'm not sure how to deal with this piece.

Nice stuff, maybe you can use Apple cider vinegar [just on the iron stuff] or Electrolysis [ on the iron as well] I suppose you could use either method if you are not worried about removing patina. Just my 2 cents ,Good Luck

Just research diff, methods and use the one you like best. Davers

Thanks.. the Apple cider vinegar didn't touch it... I'm actually using diluted muriatic acid and it's coming along nicely.
It's the same method I use to remove calcium carbonate crust from shipwreck finds.
It will have a long soak in a sodium bicarbonate mixture when its done to neutralize the acid
