Cleaning heavily encrusted relics with olive oil?

I understand olive oil works good for cleaning rusty relics. I have a few old axe heads, horse shoes, ox shoes, door lock, etc. from an early-mid 1800s cellar hole and today started the process placing the 2 axe heads in a rubbermaid container filled with olive oil. Is olive oil the best method for removing rust from these kinds of items and if so, how long would it take for the rust to wear off? Do I need to do anything other than let the items sit in the olive oil?

There is a product called Rust Converter.You paint it on over the rust and it turns hard and black and can be sanded and painted.
I used it on the blade of an ww2 dagger i found that has a silver handle and the rusty blade is now a nice black color and rusting no more....
I dont think olive oil will do much on large rusty relica....
