I'd be careful with the BB/Marble technique, it might advance an unforeseen hairline crack.

This is what I do, if it works on the Hudson river mud that's in the bottles I find, it will work in anything:

Step 1:
Soak bottles in room temperature water, NEVER hot or cold, may cause bottle to fracture. Change water often.

Step 2:
Use a cleaner like CLR (calcium, lime, rust). Depending on how stained the glass is, you can soak it for a few hrs to 2 days.

Step 3:
Rinse well.

Step 4:
Take an old rag and mop and glow and wipe down the bottle, it will give it a polished look.
