Found what I believe is a civil war era army general service button. I'm interested in opinions on whether I should try to clean it up more or leave it alone before I ruin it. Also if cleaning it up more is in order what would be the recommended process? I've included a pic of its current condition. Thanks for any and all advice

If you see any gilt remaining on it use aluminum jelly (not navel jelly) and a toothbrush. It works wonders.
