This is the method i use to clean the inside of old bottles, i dont come across really old stuff but this method works great on 60-70s soda bottles, i used copper wire, the type used in home electrical wiring. 12 or 14 gauge i think. The wire is then snipped into chunks about 1/16th or 1/8th inch, then i add some dish detergent with water and shake the bottles by hand, using my thumb to cover the mouth. The copper acts as a tumbling media and erodes away the stuck on debris. The copper doesnt seem to erode the glass like sand and doesnt cause as much of a mess. On the outside i use a a dish washing scottbright sponge, lightly washing over the label. Use water inside and out throughout the process.

Good idea. Looks like it work's pretty well. I've got some I've never tried to clean, may give it a try. The first Mountain Dew bottles will have a Hillbilly on it & will say "bottled by Molly and Jake" or something like that. Names instead of City's they were bottled at. Good luck.

any tector i can get my hands on
i came across this post and although i dont do any bottle hunting yet. i have cleaned the inside of a bottle or 2. heres my suggestion. put some soap and water in the bottle. get steel coat hanger and put a small hook on one end (first straighten it all the way out) and about a 4x4 inch piece of old washcloth and stoke the rag up and down in the bottle. rinse do it again as needed. voila !

Harbor freight carries a cheap package of bottle brushes of all sizes and them i use CLR. The copper you use looks like it might do well also.

Sometimes in bottles there is a white calcareous deposit. It is very easy to clean if poured into a bottle of vinegar. Reaction and praise of chemistry.

If you put a copper shaving in the bottle, pour in any dishwashing detergent and fill 2/3 of the bottle with water, then you will get a very high quality and gentle cleaner. The bottle can be closed with a stopper and placed horizontally in the trunk of the car. When driving on an uneven road, the contents of the bottle will be constantly hanging and "automatic" cleaning will occur. Happens, they forgot a very dirty bottle in the trunk for 1-2 weeks - cleaning was very effective.
