to clean or not to clean

up till now i have been cleaning my finds with water and a toothbrush but that only works on the soil. it does nothing to remove tarnish.........which there is quite a bit of on all the coins i find in the area. must be something in the soil. is it best to leave them tarnished or to try some method to remove the tarnish.
