    rusty fur trade fork

    Hi folks,
This is a great site to learn about many things! I am new to this site and have a question.
I found a fur trade fork a while back and would like to clean the rust that's on the tines and the stem.
The problem is is that the handle is made of bone with some scribing on it and I don't want to damage the delicate bone handle. Any ideas on a gentle way to clean the rust off? And... how do I preserve the exposed iron once it's cleaned? Thanks!

It sounds like to me something that would be better left as is than tinkered with. I mean I don't think you're going to drastically improve the looks by using electrolosis to clean the rust off or anything (and that's IF you could remove the bone/ivory without damaging it) You wouldn't happen to have a scan/pic of this piece would you?
