How to clean-up a license plate that is rusted?

I unearthed a 1950 Tennessee license plate,''rusted''!! can see the numbers clearly.What do most people do to clean it up? Or should i just leave it the way it is?

Try Naval Jelly, you can buy it at most grocery stores in the cleaners section. We used to use this on the old steel beer cans, it would remove the rust and leave the paint.

Lots of Detectorists use EXTEND by DURO on rusty keepers.
