old metal pieces conservation after electrolysis, electrolysis alternatives

hi everyone,

i have been wondering what i could use to preserve and protect metallic objects that have been submerged in saltwater for a couple of hundred years. cannons, nails, etc, anything you usually find at shipwrecks.
any kind of transparent paint or lack ?

any alternatives except of electrolysis to treat these sometimes very large objects ?
