I'm going to be at the EmbassySuites in downtown San Diego & was wondering if it would be worthwhile to search the shoreline near the hotel? I've never been there before, but read online that there isn't really a beach there - just shoreline. Anyone ever hunt that area?
Two groups in San Diego area recommend Mission Beach area and La Jolla Shores area.
Not sure where Embassy Suites is exactly, but I would take a drive along the shoreline until you see a likely spot. There are some sandy beaches just north of where you will be staying.
Good Luck - Happy Hunting.
