Metal detecting in Southwest Louisiana

I got a metal detector for Christmas. I have used it a few times without much luck. I mainly went to Rutherford Beach (Cameron Parish). Did not have alot of success. I found alot of cans and other junk. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions of where to look.

Kind of an old posting but I detect SWLA mainly.

I target Sabine River to calcasieu and deridder down to the gulf. You will be surprised at all the places you can pull off and detect.

It’s 95% disappointing but the 5% makes it worth while.

Hit the beaches right after hurricanes and tropical surges.

I have to ask, how do you know if you can just get down and detect an area? New to this and I’ve been researching a bit but I still get nervous to get down a detect even at places I know that I can.
