Need some guidance in Goldsboro/Pikeville area

I am looking to get into metal detecting but don't know what kind of detector to invest in. I also have NO idea where to hunt. I would like to find someone locally who could possibly help me or show me how to get into this hobby. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the info but I bought a Bounty Hunter QDII last week. I tried it out and it works okay. Do you have any suggestions about where to hunt?

i mostly am into beach hunting for rings etc. i like emearld isle, and manteo nags head area. i also like myrtle beach when we go there in summer. If you are into civil war stuff, you can re-search the kinston area. There was some civil war battles in goldsboro, but not as much as the kinston area. I would still call Buddy in Kinston, even if you have purchased your detetor. He will give you a free demo and talk your ears off ! he has lots of civil war bullets and buckles etc. to show. Worth the drive over from Goldsboro. I got my beachhunter from him last year.
All of the national forests are a good place to go, and public parks. Make sure to get permission when you go to old homes or private property like that, and always make sure to cover your holes up, and carry out all your trash you dig up.
