I rarely let the weather stop me from going where I want, and saturday was no exception. Sure it was snowy, and there were cars in the ditch everywhere (some people just don't know how to drive in the snow), but I took a little road trip anyway.

Ended up stopping at 9 banks total as I only had a couple hours.

By the end of the day, I ended up picking up
$38 in Ikes
$281.50 in halves
1 - $1000 bag of dimes
2 - $100 boxes of nickels (they didn't have bags and offered boxes...who am I to refuse?)
3 - $50 bags of pennies

The Ikes were:
1971, 1971-D(14), 1972 Type 3, 1972-D(7), 1974-D(4), 1976 Var 2(6), 1976-D Var 1, 1976-D Var 2(4)

In the Halves:
1 - 90% Kennedy (1964)
3 - 40% Kennedy (1967, 1968-D, 1969-D)
2 Canadian Half Dollars (2002-P(2)) <--- First Canadian half dollars I have ever found!!

5 Foreign (Australia, 20 Cents (1981), France, 10 Centimes (1914), Hong Kong, 2 Dollar (1998), Mexico, 10 Pesos (1997), Norway, 5 Kroner (1976))

1 AA medallion

Unfortunately the $121 bag of halves was about $12 short...so I actually lost a bit on this one...oh well...

In the $1000 bag of dimes
--------------------------------
4 pre-1965 Roosevelt (1948-S, 1952-D, 1963-D, 1964-D)

2 Foreign (Barbados, 10 Cents (1984), Mexico, 10 Centavos (2003))

1 penny
1 flattened penny
1 paper clip
1 swizel stick
1 lithium battery
2 pills of unknown origin

Unfortunately, the dime bag was also short over $5..... same bank...

2 Foreign (Bahamas, 1 Cent (1990), New Zealand, 5 Cents (2000))

10 Dimes (same bank as the shortages...made back almost $1...)

1 Fake Penny

I am all but positive that the 1971 is a Canadian proof coin....which would be my first ever Canadian proof.

Nickel box #1
----------------
When I picked up this box, the top was ripped off so my view was essentially like the pic below...

So my game for those that like to play......"Which one of these is not like the others???"

Nickel Box.JPG

Yup, that buffalo looking thing....I was almost glad they only 2008 boxes of pennies now (originally I had only asked for a box of pennies, but they were all new, so I upgraded to nickels...glad I did.

1 Buffalo (1936-D) <----also a first time lifetime find! Unfortunately, it had all its legs.... :(

25 pre-1960 Jefferson (1940(2), 1940-D, 1940-S(2), 1941-D, 1946(2), 1947, 1948(2), 1948-D(2), 1952-D, 1954, 1954-D, 1955-D, 1956(2), 1957, 1957-D(3), 1958-D(2))

3 Canadian (1980, 1986, 1999)

The canadian halves were quite the find. They are pretty rare to get. I have ONE, and that was sent to me. Good find there.

All in all a pretty good day for a snowy one. You did well. :-)

A buffalo in each box of nickels! Sweet!

Nice work on all the finds!

And I always love seeing what crazy non-coin stuff you get in bags. =)

I don't CRH but I read most of the posts. I am curious as to how all these bags of coins that you all buy seem to be consistantly short? Is it really that common of an occurance? I really don't like banks, to me they are just a necessary evil. Are they really that inept that they can't accurately count a few coins? Just curious.

LOL!

I looked at the picture of the box instinctively, without even reading about him telling us to find the odd one out, and I was like... BUFFALO! Its a habbit from when I do my own boxes. =) Always gotta scan an open box!

And as far as them always being short... its just the way the coin cointers work. It's not like the tellers count the coins themselves. Between the machine letting in the wrong coins, letting in non-coins, etc. the shortage adds up. Some counters are better than others... some really stink.

And on a side note... some of them are HORRIBLY loud. I like the new quieter ones! =)

Its no fault of the banks, its the accuracy of the coin machines themselves....some are more accurate and some are less...when dealing with pennies and nickels, you occasionally find higher denomination coins like dimes and quarters mixed in and actually come out ahead, but when doing dimes, quarters or halves, you sometimes find lower denomination coins such as pennies or nickels mixed in and lose a little.

You also will find a variety of foreign coins or other misc. objects that got counted like washers or buttons.

The banks I dump at have fairly accurate machines, but I still see errors in their counts (some pennies count as dimes and dimes as pennies)..

In the big picture because I do mainly bags I come out slightly behind, but if I consider the amount of time saved (bags are faster than boxes as there are no wrappers to open) and the fact that many banks will happily sell bags as they actually have to pay to ship them out compared with being stingy selling boxes I get more to pick up at a shot so less driving time....and therefore less gasoline/car wear and tear costs....so I consider the shortages really kind of a wash in the big scheme of things.

Note: The bags mentioned above in this post were about the worst I have been off. Half dollars are notorious for being off because they sit on the machine for so long without filling up they have a much greater chance of missorted coins accumulating in them. I have had one other bag of dimes that was off this far...otherwise they tend to be within a $1 or $2 at worst and many are only a coin or two off.

Again it really comes down to the type of machine and not the bank trying to screw with you....if its misconfigured, the bank is short so they are playing the game right along with us and pay for plenty of junk that gets counted as a coin.
