Smooth Half Edges?

I picked up two rolls of halves and a good number of them had the edges smoothed down to what looked like copper underneath. Anyone know a possible cause for this? Oh and out of my $20.00 spent I pulled out $1.50 in 40%.

do they look mashed....i believe this happens when coins go through the slot machines and or the counting machines
