I happened to be browsing some online ads today and came across an ad for 350 wheat pennies for $10 and they listed having multiple 1909's as well as a 1922 but also said No key dates....but I figured "what the heck!" Even if the wheats are all turn out to be commons it would still be less than 3 cents per wheatie...decent price.
I picked them up this afternoon and they came with three whitman folders. 1 folder of 1909-1940 (almost empty) and 2 folders of 1941-1958 (1 full, 1 almost full) as well as a bag of loose pennies in which I could see some steel pennies so I figured I probably did ok.
I haven't fully inventoried them, but my first count says I got even a better deal than advertised....
Turns out there were 457 wheat pennies and 32 memorial cents + 3 coin folders (all in decent shape).
The rough breakdown of the wheaties
3 - 1909 (Philly ) (1 - faint VDB)
32 - 1910-1919 (Philly)
1 - 1910-1919 (Denver)
6 - 1910-1919 (SF)
34 - 1920-1929 (Philly)
7 - 1920-1929 (Denver)
7 - 1920-1929 (SF)
57 - 1930-1939 (Philly)
35 - 1930-1939 (Denver)
3 - 1930-1939 (SF)
70 - 1940-1949 (Philly) (6 were steel)
59 - 1940-1949 (Denver) (5 were steel)
21 - 1940-1949 (SF) (2 were steel)
21 - 1950-1958 (Philly)
91 - 1950-1958 (Denver)
10 - 1950-1958 (SF)
so 185 pre-1940 wheat pennies...and one was a 1922-D in VG or so
Unfortunately when I asked if she had any other cions she said she had already sold all the silver... :P I asked what she got for it and she said 7X face for mercs and the like....oh well...you win some, you lose some.
Can't complain about what I did get.
