Re: What's the most common date wheat you find

My good records only go back to the beginning of 2007.

So from Jan 1, 2007 my list is as follows:

This was mainly a copy and paste exercise from excel, so I added a couple of other columns as well.

Column meanings
# - My ranking by number found
Date - self explanatory
# Found - The number I found
Mintage # - The ranking accoring to the mintage numbers
Actual Mintage - The actual mintage figure.

Re: What's the most common date wheat you find

Wow, I cant thank you enough for posting such a detailed report Gman. As I look at it it seems you get alot of Denver mints, I guess because i live on the east coast it tends to be more difficult to find a mintmarked 40's wheat than it is for you (these might come once out of 4 or 5 boxes for me, relativly not too common). It seems odd how even after several decades wheats tend to circulate most where they where minted. It's also odd how the highest minted wheat is 4th on your list while #7 is first on your list even though you have a huge sampling of the wheat population. This should have meant your list should have closely followed the mintage list more than it did. Correct me if im wrong about something.

I would say you pretty much nailed it. In the midwest I tend to get a pretty good mix, but definitely more Denver than anything else for most coins.

I have looked at this exact breakdown a couple of other times over the past few years just to see how closely my numbers match the expected numbers as well as trying to figure out how many wheat pennies are really left in circulation. I have wrote that analysis in a different post (or possibly posts) a couple years ago. I am not surprised that the 1944 falls off compared to the late 1950's ones as there was just more time for those coins to get lost, misplaced, damaged, etc. Basically all coins will fall percentage wise as time goes on due to just that loss, damage, being collected, etc.

Back in 2006 when I didn't have as big of a population to work with, I had even kind of come up with a crude percentages that predict that how many one would expect to find compared to the mintage numbers and it was surprisingly fairly accurate at predicting the number that you would get from a certain year, but not as accurate at the percentages of each mintmark. My formula said that if you searched through a pile of wheat pennies pulled from circulation today that the point at which you would find roughly what you would expect was 1944. Anything newer you would find more than expected and anything older you would find less than expected with 1958 finding roughly 1.25X the expected number and 1909 finding roughly 0.45X the expected number. I should probably redo my logic with my new breakdown and see how close it is...hmmm....

The biggest surprises are
  • 1957-D and 1956-D follow 1958-D...(one of the three years 1958-D did trail, but not it lead in the other 2).
  • 1946-D is way high compared to similar other coins such as 1950-D, always has been that way for me...can't explain that one.
  • I am overdue for a 1921

GMan, you always seem to amaze me. You are unbelievable at your record keeping. I always tell myself I am going to keep good records but it never happens. I took the summer of and then just started back two weeks ago and my records have already lapsed!

Good job GMan, my hat goes off to you.
