It looks like a miniature tricorn hat. I think they used to wear them in the summer. Never really saw a closeup of a nickel. Whats with all the scars on his face. Looks like he was in a few knife fights.

What's an error like this worth? I've found a couple and I always hold onto them, I just haven't researched it very well.

Cud, nice! How many nickels do you go through in a week?

Thanks for the replies. Until recently, only searched an occasional box. This is from my 3rd or 4th box in a week's time. Each box produced at least one war nickel and the one before this had a 34 Buffalo. How does this type of error occur? Does something get in the dies? How much would it be worth? Thanks. MM2

Wow, you have some good luck. You have found a clip and a cud in 3 to 4 boxes? Awsome. I get about 1 war nickel per box and never any buffalo's. Little info about a cud...

A cud is a damaged area resembling a blob on the surface of a coin which is raised above the field a little, and which obliterates the device or inscription where it appears. Cuds are the result of die cracks which have become severe, or from die chips where part of the die surface has become damaged and broken away.

Thanks for that info AG. I better put both in a 2x2 before they end up getting spent. Any ideas on value?

Not an expert at these things but what I can gather they are about $5 to $10 depending on the size, shape of coin, ect. I would say the least probably $1.
