I don't keep records. I started to, but then I thought...this is a hobby and if I keep good records, it'll be too much work. I'm gonna quit slackin' as my New Year's Resolution and keep track for a while, see how it goes. I started in July, very small at first, then getting up to buying and ordering boxes. So, this is just a guess.

Halves: ~20,000 4 boxes, plus the machine bags, loosies, and handrolls
Nickels: ~50,000 about 25 boxes
Cents: ~20,000 about 8 boxes

Just a guess. I'll start keeping track next year.

Kindest regards,
Kantuck

Did you know that if you stacked every penny you searched it would be 14,520 feet high or about 2.75 miles. That's halfway up mount everest. Some semi key wheats don't even a mintage as high as that. At my rate it would take me 17.5 years to go through what you went through in 1 year. Now that's alot of coin. Also it seems you've gone through alot of large dollars, have you found alot of morgan's or peace dollars, how'd did you get you're hand on so many?

Then asnwer to your question is better answered like this. When will you stop searching coins? and that is a very simple answer...

When I wake up and see crushed velvet 3 inches from my face

About 600,000 in halves
100,000 in dimes
5,000 in nickels
10,000 in cents

Only exact number here is for number from the boxes of halves - 452,000 in last twelve months the rest are a pretty good estimate. Can't imagine what some of the serious cent searchers do with their copper machines and bank bags.

I think he means when he wakes up to find out that he is in a casket, dead.

Coinmojo, how long did it take to go through 3 million halves. Thats 1.5 million dollars.

Although I have searched more than this, these totals are from my documented results.... (about april 2006 - present)

pennies - 3,178,980
nickels - 977,831
Dimes - 1,169,911
Quarters - 253,549
Halves - 163,022
Dollars - 2118

Total - 5,745,411 coins

I would guesstimate that the numbers prior to that would be primarily on the order of
250,000 to 500,000 pennies
300,000 to 600,000 nickels
25,000 to 50,000 dimes
10,000 to 50,000 quarters
2,000 to 5,000 halves
100 to 200 dollars

15 boxes a wee for 52 weeks for the last 4 years.

$7,500.00 x 52 x 4 = 1,560,000.00

It's amazing how that adds up.

Are you able / willing to reveal the breakdown of the keepers found? I am interested to see how a long term average yield / box might look.
