Last night I finally finished my nickel album. I searched 1,540 nickels and in them was two War Times, one being the 1943D. It's taken me just over 2½ years and 608,850 nickels and I've finally completed my Dansco Jefferson nickel album (1938-); 161 varieties, $8.05 face (still haven't found the 2009D, but I'm not worried about that). It's tough to say how rare this one nickel is, but for me it was as rare as the other key date Jeffersons (those of 2-3 million mintages).

It feels super to have completed this album. Right now I'm not sure what I'll do. Many people have asked me, "when are you going to stop searching?" and I frequently say when I've finished finding them all (meaning the more modern albums are filled, Roosevelts, not Mercury, etc.). Part of me would rather not see another roll of nickels ever again, but another part still longs to find a 19th century nickel, a shield nickel, more proofs, more errors or more strange foreign coins. I'll have to give it some thought. I'll definitely be searching enough nickels to get the recent coins, 2009, 2010, etc., but on other hand I don't plan on buying a box of nickels again. We'll see ... What do you guys think? I'm not really a complete roll kind of hunter.

BTW my Roosevelt album and Franklin albums both need 3 varieties.

Some figures from the 608,850 nickels (I compiled this for my own sake, but in case anyone wants to know, here's one New Englander's experience searching nickels May 2007-Dec 2009)

Liberties - 6 (1904, 2 x 1907, 3 x 1912)
Buffaloes - 80 (the nice ones being 1920, 1930, 1934, 1935, 1935D, 1936, 1937, most are dateless or 1934+)
War Times - 250

(of the last two years, 147 War Times)

1942P - 9
1942S - 3
1943P - 51
1943D - 1
1943S - 15
1944P - 28
1944D - 5
1944S - 2
1945P - 19
1945D - 4
1945S - 9

Proofs - 9 (70S, 73S, 74S, 75S, 80S, 82S, 83S, 90S, 01S)
Errors - I've found a few cuds, a bunch of clips, including two double clipped nickels (one being a War Time) and some slight offset strikes (nothing incredible)

Keys (under 10 million minted, my figures for these are minimums, I didn't initially keep track too well and I now only flip nickels with a mint mark, so I know I've missed some 1950's and 1955's)

1938D - 1 (a month ago)
1938S - 3
1939D - 4
1939S - 5
1949S - 14
1950 - 3
1950D - 3
1951S - 8
1955 - 9

I believe that we have just calculated two different things. When I get bored, I might figure out the same thing you did. See, I have only been taking into account mintage figures of pre-60s. I'm not so much trying to figure out how many 43Ds are still around exactly. It was just kind of a way for me to compare the rarity of the 43D to a standard pre-60.
Oh well, I guess its not really that important...and it's making my head hurt. ???

rydiggaahh, good job on that '50D. I am still working on finding one. I have five nickels left. '38D, '39D, '39S, '43D and '50D. Just found my first '51S (and then my second, and third) about two weeks ago.

The 1943-d was actually the first war nickel i ever acquired. I found it in an old jar of coins i had lying around. Scratched that tough date off pretty early if i may say so.
