Was it used back in the '70's? I can't remember. The world may never know. ffd

Re: Who "coined" the word skunk?

When shut out of anything, the term "skunk" is apparent to anyone who has been within close proximity to a skunk; including being sprayed.
When I'd go hunting or fishing as a kid with my Dad, and I "bested" him in the endeavor, he'd always say that I had "skunked" him.

My guess is that the term has been used since caveman days...in various "dialects."

I agree with AU24K SR. "Skunk" is a common fishing term. As in, "We finally got the skunk off the boat."

It definitely applies to not having any success with CRHing.

Good luck to all.

Maybe we shouldn't eat bananas while searching either.

Re: Who "coined" the word skunk?

Eating bananas while fishing is bad luck. There are two common theories on the origin of this superstition.

1) There used to be poisonous spiders which hid in banana cargos and therefore bananas were forbidden on fishing vessels.

2) Trying to catch fish when you already had enough to eat (bananas) was considered being too greedy by the sea gods and therefore no fish would be caught.

Ridiculous as it sounds, I have heard of many skunk trips being saved by finding a banana belonging to a nonbeliever and throwing it overboard.

Just adding to the general wealth of useless knowledge.

Thanks for letting me share.
