This is my first post.
About a week ago my fiancee told me that she had an old nickel for me, stating: "I think its a 1958." As it turned out, it was a very nice 1938 Jefferson, perhaps an XF-40, and with a "D" mint mark. Needless to say, I was shocked. About fifteen years ago, I used to roll hunt for nickels, with the goal of completing the 1938 - 1961 set. I found all but two, the infamous 1950-D, of course, and surprisingly, the 1955. I found two 1939-D examples, and perhaps a dozen or so 1950-dated coins, and two or three sets of War nickels - but never the 1950-D.
This week, I was inspired to try again, I obtained two $100 boxes from my local bank, both sealed H. F. String boxes.
I found:
1939 (2), 1940, 1941, 1945-P, 1946 (2), 1947, 1947-D, 1948, 1948-D, 1949, 1949-D, 1951 (3), 1951-D (2), 1952, 1953-D, 1954-D, 1955-D (3), 1957 (2), 1957-D (6), 1958 (2), 1958-D (6), 1959-D (6).
There were no proofs, or "speared bison" coins; no other varieties except a 2000-D with a heavy die clash, with what appear to be flames over the roof on Monticello. No foreign coins, although there was a clad dime in one roll.
This appears to be rather lackluster compared to what others are finding.
The most surprising was the absence of any 1954 or prior "S"-mint coins.
I have always heard the 1971 is a bit scarce. I found exactly one.
Thanks to all for the excellent posts.
