Got some halves today--ALL of them are 2001-P's. At first I was disappointed, as there's no excitement in just going through a bunch of clad coins all with the same date. However, my 2006 Redbook says they were never meant to be released for circulation, and values them in MS-65 uncirculated condition at $10 each! I see on E-Bay that today one has reached a bid of $5.50 plus $3.95 shipping, so that's not far from the $10 mark. The mint sells them in rolls for $18.75 each which is less than $1 each. I wonder how they got out? I wonder what I should do with them? Mysteries, mysteries, and they're mine!!!!! All MINE!!!! Bwa ha ha ha ha !!!!!!!!!!

Hate to put the kabosh on your celebrating Mike, but the 2006 Red Book's claim that 2001-P's are not released for circulation is a misprint. It's just from 2002 until the present. The clue is the mintage totals. Modern Kennedys (1990-2001) normally have mintages from 10-25 million each for the P & D of each year. 2001 is right on par with 21.2 million for the P and 19.5 million for the D. But starting in 2002 the mintages drop off the table down to 2-3 million each, indicating a strictly made-for-collector production run.

That doesn't mean you still can't sell them at the prices you saw quoted. BU rolls are BU rolls.

I got 15 rolls of 2001-d's last time out... total bummer dude.... seems as if some banks are getting them that way, straight from the fed. Makes me wonder if they aren't trying to get the silver back themselves?

I found some too. I found this on the mint's web page:"The United States Mint is opening the vault and offering never before released 2001-dated (P) Kennedy half dollars! To complete this offer, the United States Mint is including 2001-dated (D) Kennedy half dollars in the two-roll set as the 2001 (D) were only released in small quantities in limited areas of the country."
I guess they need more in circulation. :-\

HH!!

That's interesting news from the Mint, Joe.

Wonder why they weren't put into circulation until now. Maybe the silver we've all been saving for the past few months has depleted the circulating stock. How funny would that be!

But I've seen plenty of 2001 P's and D's over the years. Maybe Vegas was one of the areas where they were in limited release. Anybody else find 2001's fairly regularly?

Yea, I think that Vegas got dumped some of these. The last 100 I bought were all this date, every last one of them. I was also told by a coin shop here that it was indeed a misprint, and that some folks are taking advantage on ebay of that fact.
Sorry, I was excited too when I found my first roll when I started this whole sifting for silver thing. Still haven't found much silver, but great nickels from the casinos. And Immy has got a great thing goin with that penny casino. I didn't know there were any left that had pennies in their machines. Seems so many are going coinless.
Keep lookin though!

Yeah, nickels have been pretty good so far this year. Today's $40 batch was just average though -

1941
1954D
1956D
1957D (2)
1958D
1959D

...and a 1995 Canadian.

I've had better years for wartime nickels though. By April 6th in 2003 I had found 20, but this year I'm only at 10. Maybe I'll get a flurry of finds in the second quarter.
