Well, today silver hit $14.49. The volatility on silver is amazing, and mostly up! I was inspired by the reports of finding Franklin's to check out my local Standard Bank branch. Of course, they had no halves on hand, but the nice teller said there was a guy who has been buying 4 boxes ($2000 for 4000 halves) every couple weeks. This bank said they order on Monday and get them Thursday. I asked if I could buy a box, but the person who orders the change said she only will order 4 boxes at a time, not 5 , not 6, only 4, or 8, or 12, etc.
So instead, today I got a box of dimes ($250, for 2500 dimes) and 10 rolls of quarters to serve my need to hunt for silver till Monday. As always, I found 0 silver quarters (I never find silver in quarter rolls), and 5 - 90% silver dimes, all Rosie's, '52, '53, '56, '60 & '64. Last summer I opened 20 rolls of dimes, or 1000 dimes and found 4 silver Rosie's. Todays silver find rate is about half of last summer. I wonder if that is an indication that more people are "mining" the banks?
Gold is at $701.
Now, if I could just get the bank to order me a box of $20 St. Gaudens at face value......
