30-1943 steel cents in various conditions. I asked the teller if I could keep them and she didn't care. I can only wonder how many non-steel wheatbacks went into the collecting bag and are now going back to be re-rolled. HH-MM2

Same thing happened to me about a month ago. I got two, one was AU/MS according to my dealer, the other was nice looking but was starting to show signs of the elements hitting it. Richard Hartford gave some great advice on how to stop that from happening.... :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

M2,
That is just awesome! :icon_thumleft:
When Apush asked about finding steel wheaties in bank rolls a week or so ago, I was thinking there would not be many to make it through the sorter. You definitely scored big.
They may not be worth a whole lot, but they sure represent a period when America was putting everything it had to into the war effort. I call your score a save -- just like pulling relics from the ground before the construction blade takes them away forever.
Congratulations!
Steve

I would love to know as I have 3 that are BU and all are starting to rust around the edges.

Pardon my ignorance...Please explain "cleaning a magnet" Is it something I as a regular person can do? Do you work on machines? I need info on this event.

To mountainman2 and all others on the east coast,

It never ceases to amaze me what you guys find. It's always great to see your finds.

To just mountainman2,

I see you still use your wooden table to take pics. It must be the 'lucky' table.

Great finds and keep it up.

On some of the machines I dump at, there is a big magnet that surrounds the inside of the hole where the coins go in. You can reach your hand in and feel around the edges for anything stuck to it. Most often you will find screws, washers, or foreign coins if anything is there. However on some coin counters the magnet is inside, so it depends on what kind of machine it is.

Finding all those steel pennies is simply awesome. And even better that they were free! I think someone might be getting a dream box of wheats soon :o

I found my first 2 Steel Pennies in the wild the other day, was in 5 dollars worth of customer rolls, along with a dozen wheats and a few teens :D

What's the point of having a magnet in their machine. Is it to make sure people don't use washers as money?

The magnet helps catch things that can jam up the machine. Besides the usual magnetic coins, it also catches pins, tacks and other sharp objects. I've gotten jabbed a number of times. The entire magnetic catch on the TD counter's tray comes out to make cleaning the magnet easier. Thanks for all your comments.

TD doesn't sell bags off the machines, at least not in my area.

Put an open jar of rice or baking soda in the bottom of your safe. It attracts the moisture that will ruin those coins.
