Just had to resurrect this old thread.

It wasn't in a roll, but I went to dump some coins at the banks coin counter, I filled the half bag and as the teller was taking it out there were several coins sitting it the trash tray. She gave me a beat up penny and then this coin, it is worn almost away but luckily the date is still there.

1773

It is a 1/2 reale can make out the date but not the mint mark. It is the oldest coin I have found while coin roll hunting and actually beats the 1783 cent I found in Granby Connecticut

My oldest CRH finds thus far have been an 1891 Indian Head cent , followed by 1909 Wheaties (3 so far) then 1911 Wheat cent . My oldest silver from CRH was a 1917 Walking Liberty half dollar .

1810 Large Cent - got it in a bag of halves. Also got some silver dollars from 1880's. Still waiting on gold and bust coinage.

It was a long time ago, but I found an 1823 bust half from a box of halves! AU condition, I suspect it was a collection dump.

An 1823 Bust Half dollar in AU condition would likely not have enough metal loss of the planchet to fit into a roll of half dollars. Pre-1836 half dollars had a 32.5mm diameter planchet. Post-1836 Bust half dollars have a reeded edge with a diameter of 30mm. Modern half dollar planchets have a 30.6mm diameter. So any half dollars pre-1836 would not fit in a half dollar roll unless it was extremely worn or had been shaved. Back then they had lettered rims to combat shysters who would shave down coins.

Not calling you a liar, as it is easy to forget details of some coins. Perhaps your find was a post-1836 Bust half dollar?

I see that he said "box of halves" no roll of halves. That is a slight but significant difference!

I keep hoping for a gold coin in a roll!

I've been hunting 35+ years. Please educate me on what carriers deliver "box of halves" unrolled? Is there some fly-by-night coin carrier that fills boxes of halves loose? They just hold the box under the chute and tape it up when the count reaches $500? The "slight but significant difference" is that you didn't think before responding.

And I didn't read through all the responses in the thread, but there was a member of TNet who found a gold coin in a roll. I think it was dimes and the photo evidence was the obvious gold rim visible through the Brinks clear plastic roll.

I wonder if he was talking "bank box" or a customer box of halves? He may have the date wrong, who knows. but why not give him a thumbs up instead of belittling him? Just my 2 cents

I found a gold coin in a dime roll several years ago. I also remember the picture you reference of another member who also has found gold in a dime roll.

I've also found a Bust half (1830) but it wasn't in a roll, it was loose. As mentioned, they're unrollable generally by modern standards because of the larger diameter.

I couldn't remember who received the pre-1836 Bust half. I thought it was MountainMan. But I do remember that it was handed over loose by the teller.

Ben Cartwright - I didn't belittle the poster who claimed he found a pre-1836 Bust half. I was pointing out the technical specifications of a coin in AU and the possibility that it could be found in a roll. Go read my post again and you will read that I'm not calling the poster a liar. The possibility is that the details of the recovery are fuzzy.

Diver, I apologize for taking it the wrong way, I miss-read it.
I would love to find some older coins, I found my first Franklin this year, had found Walkers before but never a Franklin!
I keep all the silver and proof coins I find.
