Just had to resurrect this old thread.

It wasn't in a roll, but I went to dump some coins at the banks coin counter, I filled the half bag and as the teller was taking it out there were several coins sitting it the trash tray. She gave me a beat up penny and then this coin, it is worn almost away but luckily the date is still there.

    1773

It is a 1/2 reale can make out the date but not the mint mark. It is the oldest coin I have found while coin roll hunting and actually beats the 1783 cent I found in Granby Connecticut

It was a long time ago, but I found an 1823 bust half from a box of halves! AU condition, I suspect it was a collection dump.

An 1823 Bust Half dollar in AU condition would likely not have enough metal loss of the planchet to fit into a roll of half dollars. Pre-1836 half dollars had a 32.5mm diameter planchet. Post-1836 Bust half dollars have a reeded edge with a diameter of 30mm. Modern half dollar planchets have a 30.6mm diameter. So any half dollars pre-1836 would not fit in a half dollar roll unless it was extremely worn or had been shaved. Back then they had lettered rims to combat shysters who would shave down coins.

Not calling you a liar, as it is easy to forget details of some coins. Perhaps your find was a post-1836 Bust half dollar?

I see that he said "box of halves" no roll of halves. That is a slight but significant difference!

I keep hoping for a gold coin in a roll!

I've been hunting 35+ years. Please educate me on what carriers deliver "box of halves" unrolled? Is there some fly-by-night coin carrier that fills boxes of halves loose? They just hold the box under the chute and tape it up when the count reaches $500? The "slight but significant difference" is that you didn't think before responding.

And I didn't read through all the responses in the thread, but there was a member of TNet who found a gold coin in a roll. I think it was dimes and the photo evidence was the obvious gold rim visible through the Brinks clear plastic roll.
