What do I look for in Nickels? I THIMK any before 1956 and the '42-'45 war nickles.
Anything else? I think I read somewhere that none were made in '22,'32' & '33.

Re: 7/30/06 nickels

Some people save any pre-1960, trying to complete a roll of each date & mint mark. Also look for proof nickels with an S mint mark starting in 1971. They have a mirror-like finish.

From $40 in nickels today -

1940
1941D
1948
1954D (2)
1957D (3)
1958D
1959D

...plus the oldest proof I've ever found, 1961, beating the 1962 penny and nickel I found earlier this year. It's got some scuffs and scrapes but the sharp edges are still noticeable.

Found my first buffalo yesterday plus a bunch of nickels I needed for my book. No war nickels but a few before and after dates. 1 1964 Roosie dime and 8 wheats also. HH

Re: 7/30/06 nickels

Excellent killerwine! Still waiting for my first Buffalo, the old kind that is. Tried $35 again today and did better -

1939 (2, both keepers)
1946 (2)
1946S
1955D
1959D

Decided to do a full court press on nickels for a few weeks in addition to pennies (and halves when I can get 'em). I'm a few coins away from finishing a couple of tough rolls and it's nagging at me!

Great job Immy on your finds, and on the two buffs mentioned in the thread.

I'm thinking about switching over to nickels for a while, but find I am rather addicted to finding handfulls of the pre-1982 copper pennies. According to the latest quote on copper, I now have accumulated $91.75 in copper value (that's 3920 copper pennies).

Yeah, I know, a handfull of silver halves would beat that for metal value, but.... I can't help it, I'm addicted to pennies, it's just plain fun!!

Re: 7/30/06 nickels

Buffalo ahoy!!! Found my first one of the year, 1920-S. And get this...I actually had a dream last night that I plucked one from a roll. No kidding! Here are the results from the rest of the $35 -

1939 (keeper!)
1941
1942S (silver ;D)
1946D
1947
1956D
1957D

And here's an idea how much of a number cruncher I am!

- this is my first buffalo since Dec. 6th of last year (1913)
- the first mintmarked buffalo since 12/24/03 (1913-D)
- the first S mintmarked buffalo since 1/28/01 (1917-S)
- the first time I've found a buffalo and a wartime silver in the same batch since 2/8/04 (1929, 1935 & 1945-D)
- this is also the first 1942-S of the year and the first since 10/5/04

See what happens when the roll hunting bug gets coupled with a stat rat! ;D ;D

Stay in the hunt everyone and good luck!
