MY WIFE AND I PUT ALL THE LOOSE CHANGE FROM OUR POCKEST IN THIS BIG JAR. THEN WHEN IT GETS FULL WE TAKE IT TO THE BANK...ANYWAY I DECIDED TO GO THROUGH THE JAR AFTER READING POSTS IN THIS SECTION I.E. COIN ROLL HUNTING...WELL IT TOOK ME A WHILE BUT I CAME UP WITH

2 WHEATIES - 1945 AND 1950
1 90% QUARTER - 1956
1 ERROR QUARTER
- THE YEAR SAYS 198 THATS IT ! THE QUARTER IS PRETTY NEW, SO THERE IS NO WAY THE LAST DIGIT WAS WORN OUT. IT MUST NOT HAVE BEEN STRUCK AT THE MINT IN THE FIRST PLACE...THERE ISNT AN ILLEGIBLE DIGIT THERE, THERE IS JUST NOTHING - JUST BLANK SMOOTH SURFACE....PRETTY COOL...I THOUGHT ABOUT PUTTING IT ON eBAY, BUT I DIDNT FIND ANY OTHERS LISTED LIKE MINE, HOW MUCH IS THIS COIN WORTH ?

I ALSO PUT ASIDE ABOUT 30 QUARTERS FROM 1965 TO 1970. ARE THESE 40% SILVER OR THATS JUST THE HALFS IN THESE YEARS ?

First welcome to the club. You will shortly be addicted ;D As far as the mistrike quarter It is very possible that you have a legit mint error there from a partially capped die or something, we like pictures around here so if you can post one that'd be great. And on your last point Silver in coins was ended in 1964 except for the Kennedy Halves, so any quarter or dime 1965 is clad. Enjoy the search and HH.

Normal bicentennial halves, meant for circulation are clad. If I remember correctly the "silver" proof sets from that era were only 40%.

It's the color. Coins are made by plating or so they look like sandwiches with silver on the outside copper on the inside. The Silver coins don't have the copper so there is no copper showing through on the rims.

Careful some of the silver clad (40%) coins can fool you. Ageing, staining, dirt, etc can cover the edges so it makes it hard to tell. I always look for other things on the coins and keep finding silver that didn't stand out when I checked the edges.

Good advice! I always check every date. BTW, I got skunked on $100 today from the casino. At least they had some to search. Might try again tomorrow.

I always check each coin. Clad or not. I mean just to find a proof is nice as well! But the DDOs are worth more than yer average Kennedy half, so I will always every half them a glance.....I have found some silver ones by suprise as well, as for some reason the edges did not really look silver, they were just dark. If anything look for coins with no reddish/copper color. Though once in awhile I will find a clad coin discolored enough I think it is silver when looking at the edge.
Just my $.02 worth....
;)
