Turned in my box of dimes this morning and just had to get some more coins so wanted to try some more nickels. So I picked up one box of nickels to keep me occupied til the weekend when I dump it so I have spending $. I tend to keep the older ones just because even if they aren't war nickels. I guess anything Pre 1960 I'll keep and I don't know why because I'm not completing any sets probably just cause it is old and uncommon to find often. But I may have to change my ways if they really aren't going to get me much unless they are uncirculated.

Updated totals, box completed. Some decent stuff. 36 total coins.
1939 x2
1940
1940d
1941 x4
1942 x3
1942s
1946
1946d
1947
1947s
1948
1948d x2
1949
1949d
1951s
1952 x2
1953d
1954
1956d x2
1957
1957d
1958d x3

And a couple other notables that I've never seen or were altered

1990 Bermuda Nickel(fish on obverse)
1992 Canadian Nickel(1867-1992)

Also pulled a 1964d US Nickel where someone very carefully etched there name into it, So I have a Dave Gibson nickel. One of a kind lol!

Yeah I check on coinstudy to see whats worth keeping in circulated state. But I'll still keep anything pre 60s just cause I guess. Finding a ton of 1942 nickels. Will check them all when I'm done to see the mintmarks. Should have updated totals later.

Nope!

Mintage of 35% silver nickels started in October 1942. Many 1942 Cupronickel 5-cent coins were minted before the transition (mostly in philly with no mint mark).

Officially, no cupronickel 5-cent coins were minted in SanFran in 1942. However, the rarest of all Jefferson nickels is a 1942 obverse with a small 'S' on the reverse (the reverse of a 1941). It is not silver. If you got one of those, it is the 2nd of its kind.

UPDATE:
Here is what the Mint records show:
Type 1 - This is the copper/nickel type
o 1942 (Philadelphia - no mint mark) - 49,818,600
o 1942-D (small 'D' to the right of Monticello) - 13,938,000
o 1942-S (small 'S') - NONE, NO RECORDS of this variety

Type 2 - This is the 35% silver
o 1942-P - 57,900,600 (Large 'P')
o 1942-S - 32,900,000 (Large 'S')

Good info. So 43-45 is definitely no doubt silver? Well to a perecentage.

As for the 42's that I have collected I have these. A couple I got before I even started roll hunting, just stuff I noticed in my change.
1942 x3
1942 Large S
1942 Large P
So have 2 that are 35% silver so thats good.

Yup all 43-45 are and any '42 with the large mintmark (P, D, or S) above the dome are 35% silver.

TRIVIA: The Philly 1942 Jefferson Nickel minted out of the War-Time silver alloy was the first coin design EVER to bear the 'P' mint mark.
