So this weekend i did 3 box of pennies, and a nickel box. Got 28% copper overall, and found a 1949 s wheat.. not too bad. I also found my FIRST proof penny, a 1967! its got that mirror finish and squared off edge to it. I also scored 2 buffaloes in my nickel box, and 2 hole fillers as well! one Buffalo is 1937 d, my FIRST dated buff! Overall a great weekend, ended up getting 42 rolls of solid copper.

some nice finds and great pics too

I love that bright red '55S wheat - did you just find that one too?

I found a nice red-brown '55S myself several months ago but it's not as nice as the one in your pic.

I just found another silver nic ('44P) myself in the 10th roll of my 2nd nickel box of the weekend. That makes 5 silver nic's in my last $120 of searched nickels. I hope my good luck continues. I love searching nickels and cents. :)

I really like bright red AU/BU wheat's. I found a nice red AU '40 wheat cent last weekend which is probably the reddist wheat I've ever found and surprisingly it's such an earlier date too. :)

some people on here are uneducated about mint marks and proofs. People sometimes sww the "s" mintmark and automatically assume it's a proof. San Francisco made "s" mint coins for circulation that were not proofs as well. Nice find, definately looks like a proof coin/SMS to me.

Yes, nice finds and pics.

Speaking of proofs, though, the Mint did make any Proof Sets (or coins either) for the years '65 - '67; inclusive.

Rather they made a lesser product call Special Mint Sets.

"Though often collected with proof sets, these sets are technically not proof coins. They were struck on specially prepared blanks like proofs, but no proofs were issued during these years."

If anyone knows the reason, I'm sure many on here would be interested.

Again, nice finds and pics.

Due to rising silver prices, and the rise in inflation in the '60s, coin collecting surged in popularity. Coin collectors were considered to blame because of the disappearance of silver coins from change, leading to coin shortages. Because of this, the mint went on a "war" with coin collectors and suspended the use of mintmarks on coins dated from '65-67 and stopped producing proof sets. Because proof sets were a big money maker though, they decided to compromise and make special mint sets for those years.

Interesting stuff! So its a "proof" without the proof title, special mint set eh? i wonder who was dumb enough to bust it out
