What is the Craziest Thing You've Done to Get Silver?

It's a slow day at work and I was reflecting on some of my CRH antics and thought I'd share a few things that I've done or have happened to me. I look back on the past couple of years and shake my head. My wife thinks there's something seriously wrong with me!

* Went to a credit union that is fairly strict on membership. Teller asked if I had an account (which of course I didn't). I happened to have interviewed with this bank a few months back so I told the teller I was hired and starting in two weeks. Once I was an "official" employee I'd be able to open an account. I scored two solid rolls of 40's from this bank

* I'm sure we've all done this one: Yes, I have an account..............................

* My favorite one. I take my kids into banks that won't sell coins unless your a client. My kids are both under two and the tellers eat them up with a spoon! I've scored a lot of silver by bringing my kids in with me!

* Waited at one branch for over an hour to sign up for an account because one teller had a bunch of "old" rolls that had been sitting around forever. I got the six rolls and I also got skunked!

* Was witnessed loading halves into my car and followed by some unusual individuals. They stopped following when I pulled into the sheriffs office parking lot.

* Word of advice, if you don't have a canvas bag or a box to hold CWR's and the bank places the rolls into a brown paper sack! Make sure you hold the bottom of the sack when your walking out. I had a the bottom of a paper bag bust open on me once scattering 20+ rolls into the parking lot on a busy Friday.

Love to hear some other stories so wife knows, it's not just me

just this morning I was at my dump bank and the coin machine was jammed so one of the tellers opened up the machine and cleaned out the junk and she checked and emptied the small reject bin -which I was pretty sure had a few coins in it - in the trash. So when I was finished dumping I checked the trash and found 3 quarters - 1 damaged clad U.S. quarter and 1x'75 Canadian quarter and 1x'07 Olympic Canadian quarter that sure looks silver. Those Canadian's are such a tease.

Digging in the trash for coins is about my limit - and I only do that if the trash can is about empty so I don't have to search through too much trash.

I'm in college and have no car, if I want to CRH at all the only way of getting boxes back to my dorm room is a 2 mile bike up a hill. Not fun with 40lbs on your back.

took a cougar asst branch manager out for coffee after getting handed about 4 dollars of 90% change. She was most likely a looker back in the day.

Man, that is dedication! I couldn't imagine biking up hill with 2 boxes of halves strapped on my back!

There is usually a trash can next to the coin counters. I ALWAYS look in there and often reach in if I see anything like a coin. Usually it's foreign tin change which is garbage anyways. But I did get a '43 steel penny out one time. It's never a gamble, and usually a gain, however meager.

ALWAYS look, ALWAYS check, ALWAYS buy (CWR).

Going through 12000 coins just to find 1 silver coin is pretty common for me and it seems crazy in its own right....

Let's see.

* Taking all the lint and miscellaneous objects that get pushed into the inside reject slot of the self-serve coin machines. Note that it requires assistance from a bank employee to get at it. Usually find some 1 Euro Cent or other similarly small coins, but I have scored a few foreign silver coins this way. It can be a bit dusty having to pick through lint, paperclips, and other objects, but everything you find is free. I think I found a very thin broken gold chain once too (and a couple silver trinkets). If you try this, I recommend bringing a ziploc bag to dump the bin into....the lint/dirt gets stuck to the canvas bag and it never seems to really come clean again...for awhile.

* A couple times when a bank was really slow and the teller wouldn't sell me the bag off the machine, I've talked the teller into letting me trade coins I want for ones in my pocket. Only do this if you will never be able to buy a bag from a particular bank as you are potentially teaching tellers what to look for.

* Driving and CRHing.... No law against it... Though it could be considered distracted driving I suppose... Works best on long road trips with miles between banks to minimize the seed money needed as you can cash in along the way.

* Getting coins out of the trash next to the coin machine. (no silver yet though)

* Spending most of a trip to Las Vegas CRHing slot machines... At one point I met another CRH'er on this board and after chatting for awhile, we did some CRHing together at the half dollars slots. When we first sat down at one casino, a slot machine mechanic nearby was a bit nosy and after both us put in $100 and pushed cash out immediately, he decided he needed to "tattle" on us to a floor manager. I could overhear them talking about us from behind a bank of machines nearby, so I decided to confront them. They proceeded to tell me how someone had been in there the night before and had cashed out a bunch of half dollars without playing and tried to say there was some type of Las Vegas law against it (doubt it). Little did they know the guy from the night before had been me... LOL I did manage to pull a walker, a franklin, a few 40%, and at least one 90% from them the previous night.

I am sure there have been other things, but those are a few off the top of my head...

Never thought to look in the lint tray on the coin sorters. Likes like I'm adding a zip lock bag to my traveling kit!

*Meeting another CRH board member to machine-hunt here in Vegas. (Whoa, deja-vu!) First person I ever met from the internet and was pleased to see he was normal...well, "CRH normal".

*Scoring hundreds of 40%ers one night at my fave casino and quickly walking back to my car (which was two blocks away) at night carrying a large bucket of silver with my jeans sagging from full pockets. Never felt so paranoid in my life. Avoided coming within 10 feet of anyone.

I once offered to move a 6-figure CD to a bank for bag buying privileges from their coin counter. I was denied.

I am avoiding a local branch because I just stoped picking up boxes they ordered me because they would only order one box and they were all skunks.
