My Nickel Adventures
I have not posted in a while but I thought I would give my opinion on what the toughest nickels are to find from coin roll hunting. I realize that not everyone will agree, keep in mind these rankings are from my personal totals. I have not included War Nickel totals as the 43D is by the toughest for me to find. These finding come after hundreds of boxes searched. Please feel free to chip in with your experiences. Thanks for looking. Dennis. I have added the amount of each found thus far.
1. 1950D,1954S Large S -1 Each

Re: My Nickel Adventures
I'm just getting into nickels now, so this list is a great place to start. Thanks for posting it. I'm currently keeping all 1960 and before. I'll have to check mine to see if any of them so far are on your list. Is there anything tough to find after the '60s that I should keep my eye out for?

Re: My Nickel Adventures
Hey Dennis, good to see you posting again. How's the hunting been lately? Have you been able to top the 40 silver nickel finds you found last Nov I think it was? I've slowed down on my nickel searching some lately - I've been trying to search more dime & half boxes lately. But I did manage to search 5 nickel boxes last month and found 4 silver and 1 no-date D buffalo (still soaking in vinegar). And I got real lucky finding my 2nd '50D nic in a box late last Xmas eve - and if I remember correctly I think there was a silver war nic in that same roll which was kind of a nice Xmas gift from Ol' St. Nick.
You list looks good to me but since you search a lot more nic's than I do you would have a much better opinion on this than I would.
Good luck out there & HNH!

Re: My Nickel Adventures
Thanks for the kind words. I am still attempting the 1 box a day for a solid year, so far so good, just starting my seventh month (still not sure I will make it the full year). I have not topped the 40 for a month but I found 184 so far for an average of a little over 30 per month I hope to find somewhere between 350 and 400 for the year. You are doing good on the better dates, I have only found 1 50D since I started, you just never know what will turn up. If you like I can give the amounts found from the nickels listed. Thanks again and Good Luck. Dennis.

Yeah, I was even going to ask you how many from/of your list you've been able to find.

Re: My Nickel Adventures
It sounds like there are some fellow big time nickel hunters here. I just found my first 50d last month and it was a rush. Here is a list of how many of the more rare nickels I have found in about 250 boxes. It would be interesting to compare with others. I think I have found eight 1941 large S but I don't know about 1954 large S.

that's a really good list of finds. I'd say you're a pretty big nickel hunter yourself having searched 250 boxes and with a list like that. I would imagine you've hunted down your share of buffaloes too.

Re: My Nickel Adventures
Here are the toughest nickels for me to find (with number found):
1938-S (2)
1950-D (2)
1939-D (5)
1943-D (9)
1939-S (17)
1938-D (20)
1944-S (21)
1942-S (31)
1944-D (33)
1941-S Large S (35)
1955 (40)
My numbers include the silver ones as the above list are the only nickels in which I don't have at least 1 roll plus filling the two books I decided to fill. With the exception of the war nickels, once I get above a full roll of any particular variety the rest of my pre-1960's are just filling up my overflow bags and to date I have not sorted through my overflow bags to figure out an accurate count of how many of any particular date I have.
The breakdown of my war nickel find totals:
1942-P (40)
1942-S (31)
1943-P (195)
1943-D (9)
1943-S (92)
1944-P (71)
1944-D (33)
1944-S (21)
1945-P (66)
1945-D (44)
1945-S (67)
I can't say exactly how many nickels I have searched through to get to these totals as I didn't keep records until around 2006. From that point forward is approximately 712 boxes worth. Since much of my searching prior to 2006 was done at nickel slots in casinos (insert $20, cash out, search, sometimes play, repeat), I would estimate these totals come from approximately 1000 boxes worth.

Re: My Nickel Adventures
Nice finds. I am still working on a $100 cwr nickel box and so far it's produced 12 buffaloes. Lots of pre 60's. Also have a box of fed wrapped to go thru. I'll post my own when done.
