    Coin Box Finds

    Hello there!

Does anyone know what the average amount of keepers out there? I am new to this and so far I have found these:

    2 Penny Boxes = 0 IH 5 1910's, 10 1920-30's, and 32 1940-50's. About 800 copper pennies and 2 canadian pennys.

    3 dime boxes = 0 keepers

    4 quarter boxes = 0 keepers also

Half dollars were hard to get and I managed to get 15 rolls from my local bank. Had 4 rolls of MS-60 and above Kennedy clads and a 1969 and a 1970 D. Somehow the 70 D looks very shiny compared to the 69, does anyone know why?

(forgot to add nickels, went through 2 boxes to find 6 war nickels, 1 buffalo, and 38 pre-1959 Jefferson's (excluding war nickels).

    1970 d... sigh...

There are no tried and true keeper amounts. Some have great luck with halves, others have luck with dimes. Depends on your area. The 1970 is probably more 'shiny' as it is from a mint set, and not as circulated.

    Depends on your area.

Last month I was getting 1 silver dime every 30ish rolls.
This month I am getting 1 silver dime every 96 rolls.

Your nickel boxes are fabulous. I have done 7 boxes so far, 1 war nickel and 3 Buffalo.

There is no "average keepers" figure you could count on reliably. They all vary by area, time of year, time of month, mood of tellers, time of month, mood of servicing company, grandma dumping grandpas collection, grandson dumping grandmas collection, time of month...

Wow, this seems complicated. If you don't try, where would you go? Probably getting another box of nickels and pennies today.

The 1970 half dollars were only minted for mint sets. Therefore, they are hard to find in circulation and if you find one, they are usually very good condition. The 1987 halves were also only minted for sets, but they are clad.

Your pennies and nickels are very good! 6 wars is very good. Congrats, maybe focus on those veins seeing that dimes were skunks. Keep playing around and getting different denominations. You'll figure it out, and read the beginners guide again. I read that every few months to get a refresher.

    Re: Coin Box Finds

if you do enough you can have a rough idea of what to expect over a big sample but not per box

what I mean is I know my average is about 2 silver halves per box in the long run.

But I might get 20 skunks and then 3 great boxes or 10 skunks and 4 ok boxes, or 20 boxes with 2 each.

You need lots of data, lots of boxes, you can plot a "Regression" of sorts and the key is really then over the next year, 2 years, etc is your average moving up or down. Mine is still flat which is just fine by me.

You might also hit a monster cache or have an exceptional month (like my december was about twice an average month) but then things normalize again, January was a little better than average (my 2nd best month ever). February is looking to be pretty crappy so far, so once again things "normalize" , "law of large numbers" , just keep track of your finds and totals searched and you can develop some info on your area.

Most people here only post their good finds so it looks like we are all finding stuff every time we go out, which is hardly the case. CnC, DB23, & myself posted and still have many days where you might do 10-14 boxes and get 5 or less keepers, maybe even none!

The key is just volume & persistence if you want to have a constant return, if you just want some boxes now and then, don't bother keeping track. Either method and many more are all acceptable, this is a great hobby because you can do it any way you choose!

I do cents and normally average 10 wheats and 4-6 Canadian cents per box. Last box was below normal, but four rolls given me as a gift brought the average back up.

Going through another box of pennies that should keep my night preoccupied for the next couple days, I wonder if someone strips the copper layers on a zinc penny because in 20 rolls, I found about 60 of these weird pennies that are only zinc with some remnants of copper on them.

A school class(es) may have been doing some experiments with the penny.
