Foreign Coins

Hello, just wondering if anyone could find any foreign coins in bank boxes as the US Mint said that you cannot deposit foreign coins. So far I found 2 foreigns with both being canadian pennies, but there is bound to be more foreign out there.

Foreign coins are pretty easy to find CRH. The most common are Canadians, but other countries' coins can be seen occasionally too. You can even find foreign silver once in a while. I have found many foreigns, including a South African 3 pence 1943 (80%).

I found a Hong Kong 10 cent piece about a month ago in a dime box. It was brass colored.

In dimes Ive found a virtual UN of coins from a good 20 or so countries When I get a chance I will list the countries they include every continent

Of course you can't really "deposit" foreign coins into a US dollar denominated bank account without converting the currencies, but you have to understand how most sorters work. Most sorters have a magnet by the place where the coin goes down then giant wheel that spins around with a cover on it that restricts what coins can go through. An older Canadian cent that is non magnetic is the same diameter as a US cent so of course it will go through. Newer copper plated steel Canadian cents are magnetic and are usually rejected, as are non-silver Canadian dimes, quarters (and half dollars). Different coin sorters use different mechanisms to sort however, some like Coin Stars are good at rejecting coins of the wrong diameter and weight so silver coins will not go through nor will most foreign coins. Others like coins from Panama are made at the US mint and other than the design are indistinguishable from US coinage of that period because they use the same blanks.

In general, the most common (or likely) foreign coins to encounter while CRHing are:

Pennies: Canadian cents, Bahamas cents, and possibly 2 cent Euros
Nickels: Canadian nickels, many different coins/tokens
Dimes: Canadian dimes, British/Commonwealth threepence, British/Commonwealth sixpence, British 5p (new style)
Quarters: Canadian Quarters, South Korean 100 Won, British/Commonwealth shillings, British 5p (old style), British 10p (new style)
Half-Dollars: British/Commonwealth (pre-Decimal) half crowns, British/Commonwealth florins, Mexican 10 Peso (especially in bags, less so for boxes), British 10p (old style), Indian Rupee, Panama half-Balboa, various tokens

I find them all the time.In the rolls. To day i got a hand full from the magnets. There was $500 in canadian alone!!!

You paid for them, or did you get them for free? Or is there some sarcasm I am not getting because of the laughing head.

Thanks for the replys. Probably going to post my CRH finds every month or so as this is something I do with spare time. I wonder what you do with the CRH reject coins, but my local c-store buys them from me so I don't get charged by the bank. In turn, if they find something odd, I would get to buy it from them for face. Not a bad tradeoff I guess. Hopefully something good turns up.

I actually got 5 plastic 2003 plastic Kennedy halves marked copy from a bag purchased from my pick up bank that were delivered from a Processor. Also included were 3 foreign (ecquador, france, and china(?)) 4 tokens (1 for a carousel ride, 2 for a pitching machine, and 1 for a car wash)
Also got 4 cents, a dime, 5 quarters and 3 extra halves (including a BF and a 40%)
You just never know what will show up in a bag.

I just keep the foreign coins. I figure, I paid for them. No need for them to get sorted out of the coin machines and thrown away and I lose the money, I might as well collect them too.

I get rejection coins from my CU and always keep them. I am a foreign coin collector, so if anyone doesn't want their coins they can send them to me.
