    Blank nickel planchet? Damaged dime?

Picked up a box of halfs and dimes today. Nothing in the halfs but my 3rd MEDIO-BALBOA from the Repvblica de Panama. Dimes were not good but at least on the second to last roll a 1958D FDR saved the day.

When I was leaving my main pickup bank, the Teller came running out and said here Mark ordered these for you and she gave me a brand new box of halve wrappers to go with the box of dime wrappers they gave me last month. That should hold me for a while.

I got a dime today that is messed up, don't know if it will show, maybe someone put it in a press. The nickel blank I found last week in my good war nickel box and the two cents I have had for a while now. hope the pic from my scanner comes out.

i believe the dime is an error and of course the nickel is an error nice find on it. i do not know how much the dime could/would bring if you sold it but if you do not sell it all you really are sitting on is 10 cents.

What did your scale say?? That should tell if it could be the coin or not.

It looks like the dime is off centered to me. What date is the half balboa? Some dates are silver:

    90% - 1904 to 1962
    40% - 1966 to 1970 (proofs until 1972)

Your dime looks Broadstruck or Off-center. Does it have the reeding on the edge? That's a key diagnostic for broadstruck (struck without the collar around it to keep it centered and place the reeding on the edge).

If it's broadstruck it's probably worth about $10 according to the Red Book.

It looks like the dime has reeding on only about 1/10 of the edge and it is just on the very top edge. The copper almost seems pushed outward around the edge.

My Balboas are 2-1973 and 1979 but thanks for letting me know there are some with silver.

    Thanks for the info.

Probably a partial collar then. I'd keep it. It's cool, would be worth a few bucks to the right person. Don't get too excited, probably no more than $5.

    Congrats.

Balboas were minted by the US Mint, so the dates of compositions match up fairly well.
