Where do you go to cash in the silver value? I am looking at getting started as this is really sounding fun.

Pawn shops. You won't get full value, but definitely over face. I would still hold it for a while though. Markets still going to go up.

    Hi All,
Don't just chuck the copper-nickel clad stuff away without checking for doubled dies. There are some really nice ones. Check the IN GOD WE TRUST Motto for overlapping and notches on the lettering. Some are almost as widely spread as the 1974 D DDO.

    Have Fun,
    Bill

Ebay does pretty good for sellers of silver coin rolls.Checked the completed listings just now, here's the ballpark figures on half rolls- 40% Kennedy roll-$25-30.00
    90% Kennedy roll-$80-85.00
    Walker's and Franklin rolls- $85-100.00+
    plus shipping.
Keep in mind this is for common dates only.Walker's and Franklins circulated.Kennedy's are mostly au-bu.More than a pawn shop I would tend to believe.

sorry for the dumb question but what are proofs and do scrape yards give you the same prices for silver that you guys and gals are talking about. I am just thinking about trying this but it sounds addictive. sounds fun

    Sorry for the delay.

Proofs are coins which have been deeply struck several times during the minting process. This gives them mirror like perfect immages. They usually have and "S" mint mark and were issued only for proof sets.

Re: BEGINNERS GUIDE TO COIN ROLL HUNTING!!!

Thanks Coolcash for the thorough, and very understandable explanation of the CRH Hobby.  As I beginner, I've been seeing it all to be rather confusing, with so many things to remember.

I've got a much better perspective now; next is to get started :P

    Coolcash,

Wish I would have saw this thread before I took back the 30 rolls I just looked at. Lots of good info here, will use it as a guide for the box of half's I'm picking up next week. Will be picking your brain for more insight to this later next week.

    Thanks again,

    Don

Re: BEGINNERS GUIDE TO COIN ROLL HUNTING!!!

    Hi All,

I just answered an email that pertained to some tips for roll searching halves. I'm gonna copy and paste it here.

Also, the Mint has just announced a regulation that would make it something that is subject to penalties to destroy or melt pre-1982 cents.

Anyway, don't limit searching halves to your own banks.

    Hi,

I have always found it a good idea to grab a local phone book and call around to area banks. If they have halves, they will be happy to tell you and even more happy to get rid of them:-) I then ask the banks that have them to let me know by calling me when ever any more come in.

Most banks hate having halves in their vaults. They usually have to wait until they have the equivalent of a full bag before they ship them out to the Federal Reserve or elsewhere. They would rather not tie up vault space and they really like getting them off their paperwork and counts.

I always use my own branch of my own bank as a drop off point for searched halves. I never bring halves back to the bank I get them from. That gets stale for the bank employees really fast. They just want to be rid of them.

While searching, you can make your work more fruitful by asking if they have any large sized dollar coins as well. Every once in awhile, a roll or two of Eisenhowers shows up. While some of the Ikes can be doubled dies and have some value, It is the few and far between Morgan or Peace dollar that turns up.

On halves, check out the IN GOD WE TRUST motto very carefully. There are more doubled dies than you can shake a stick at if you know what to look for. They are true doubled dies and not just strike doubled. You have to be able to tell the difference between the two.

I usually look for distinct extra points on the "W" of the word WE as a place to start.

Another thing...don't pass up a chance to get $10.00 worth if a bank says they have them. I've found full rolls of silver that way.

    I hope this helps!!

    Have Fun,
    Bill
