Silver plated Kennedy's?
I opened one of my half dollar boxes this week:
My wife opened a roll and exclaimed "I've got one!! And this is a good one."
But, after she pulled it out, the date reads 1971.
I found another, and it too, when edge checking, appears to be a 90%. I was excited to have found an old Ben or Walker, but it was a '71 too.
It looks like silver, has a feel of silver, but does not sound like silver.
Are these just silver plated?
Who, in their right mind, would silver plate a '71?
Thanks for your help!!!!

R.I.P. Rich Hartford, You'll be missed.
somebody who does scams would plate a 1971 and try to pass it off as the real thing, did the box contain any silver?

Hi Clovis, I've been in coins for 40 years and never heard of a silver '71. That doesn't mean that it's not rare, but odds are way against it. I need to see & hear it. Weigh it and compare it to the 90% silver 1964, then against the 40% 1965-1970. If there is no match, do the drop test against the 40% and 90% on a hard surface. Don't drop too high 'cuz if it is an 'error coin', you don't want to damage it. Next step is go to a trusted coin dealer.
My bet is that it is a lead counterfeit that you may be able to rub its edge on white paper and leave a mark.
Good Luck.

I would honestly rather have a solid roll of plated halves than a solid roll of skunk clad

It's a worthless, plated, piece of ****. Toss it in with the other clad.

Every now and then they are nice to break up the monotony of roll after roll of clad. But other than that......toss 'em.
