Looks like a mechanical doubling error... aka machine doubling. With standard double die varities, there are 2 prominent surfaces, both raised like a true strike. Mechanical doubling keeps the secondary image close to the field, as appears in your case.

Machine Doubling

Just my opinion... but what do I know.???

here is what a 1970s small date DDO - The 1970 S Doubled Die Obverse

our could be, you need to have it examined by a certified coin dealer. They can tell you if you should send it to certification service such as PCGS or NCA or ANAC. They other certifiction service are not worth much.

nice double die but thats not a small date. but notice if you read the text...

The 1970 S Doubled Die Obverse 1 is
probably the third rarest ddo known
after the 1958 ddo 1 and 1969 S ddo 1.
Considering the existence of the 1970 S
small date
, it is safe to assume that rolls
of 1970 S have been adequately
searched for varieties

????? i think its minor ddo but could it be the only small date ddo know?.??

It does look like it has been cleaned. If it is rare, that will cause a serious (>10x) reduction in value.

Still, thrilling to find.
Disagree. Lines look raised, die polish lines. It appears to be a gem UNC example, probably a 64-65RD. Of course good pics of the entire obverse would be necessary to grade it.

Disagree. At 1:00 from the 'Y' & due south of the "IBE" do not look like die polish lines; the field around the mintmark has distinctly different luster.

Hopefully OP keeps us informed. Thanks for sharing bubbadadda.

Crappy lighting can easily cause those issues. These pics look like they were taken with a Dyno-Lite, which seems to have that affect on pictures taken with it.
