We don't sell boxes to you collectors, we only sell them to businesses

I stopped at another US bank before picking up some halves today, and asked for a box of pennies. The teller was shocked that I asked, and said, "I don't think we have any but i'll check. What do you need them for?" "I like to go through them", I said. She said "Ok let me go ask her (pointing to another teller). She then comes back and said "We do not sell boxes to you collectors, we only sell them to businesses." I replied, i've bought $20 in pennies here before, and had no issue, and I can go to any other branch and have no problem. She replied "I don't make the rules, I just tell them". Pissed, I said "Ok thank you for your time". Walked outside to my dads car, told him what happened, and he went back in. Let's put it this way, I didn't get any coins however, but I've found a new Dump Bank, and my dad raised alot of hell with the branch manager for stereotyping me. I didn't go in for the fear of getting arrested :). My dad called the big wheels, and they apoligized and such. I went to another bank, where I know the Branch Manager well, told him what happened. Guess what he told me

"Next time you go through $300 of pennies, go to there bank and dump it all. " It was epic, so next time I do a large volume of searching, im going to go out of my way to do that. :)

Causing a problem where one doesn't exist (it is a banks right to sell their change to whomever they please...) is a great way to get yourself cut off unless your pops has a TON of money in an account with them.

I found a bank where the head teller doesn't want to sell me bags off her machine because she likes to search them herself. I've dumped $2.5k there this week. Search that...

I know what you mean...I usually take my mom with me roll hunting, the tellers can brow-beat her to death instead of me.

If I ever got the, "What do you need them for?", my response would be something along the lines of telling them they don't need to know what I need them for. :)

a bank is not the place to give hell, they can call the cops for even a minor disturbance in fear of being robbed, you never know. I never show anger to tellers who refuse to sell me rolls... in fact, around here, i go to random banks I do not have accounts with, ask for coin, and 9 out of 10 times they are fine with it and sell me the box and wish me luck on my search :)

I would say that for the primary purpose those rolls are intended to be sold to businesses, which require a substantial amount of change on demand. Originally, the CRH aspect of the bank's coinage didn't exist. However now there are a lot of CRHers and they sometimes drain the money supply at especially smaller banks. Thus, tellers are refusing to sell coins to us.
In my case, I was refused 5 times in a very polite way. The teller said, they have to have at least 10 rolls of each denomination on hand and request me to check later that week or next week. Twice they even ordered boxes of pennies for me. This was unusual courtesy, because banks here only order for the business account holders.
Bottom line: tellers know better when and when not to sell the coin. If you are refused, ask why. If they won't answer then just move on to another branch. It is better thing to, than raising debates and issues, because you are going to be known as "That rage coin guy". This can hurt your reputation and increase the chances you won't be given any coin in the future.
Just keep things cool, after all, life is beyond the drawn schemes.

When they ask what you want them for, say: "I am from the future and my time machine runs on zinc. Zinc is very rare in the future."

:laughing7:, but DeLorean is still running and is in the parking lot.

Seriously, what is the future of CRH? Would people hoard zincolns separating them from plastic and show up copper porn of 1959-1982 pennies. Just imagine wheats from teens and 20s valued as flying eagles in 25 years from now on.

Some of the responses on here are a little ridiculous. Talk about, "Calling the Big Wheels is a great way to give CRH exposure", and "they can call the cops for even a minor disturbance in fear of being robbed, you never know," is laughable. Lets see... I believe the cat has been let out of the bag for a while now as far as CRH'ing, Christ almighty, there was a news clip on it a while back around here. And since when are we as American citizens not allowed to voice our displeasure about something? This is what is wrong with this country, it's full off neutered sheep that baa baa around scared of their own shadow, in fear of upsetting someone. Grow a set would ya? This country was founded on people with backbone, not spineless conformists.

PS- Here's an idea for the OP, order your rolls in advance instead of trying to buy boxes on blind chance. CWR's are one thing, but looking for boxes on the fly won't produce many positive results. I have no problem ordering boxes (with or without a business acct.), even from several branches where I don't have an account. If your in a large metro area like me, spread out your orders , make your rounds, the results will be better and you won't wear out your welcome anywhere. I know your young but try not to run around in fear of being arrested because your dad spoke his mind, it is still legal.

Hi, although new to the boards I'd like to chime in here.
I frequent upwards of 12+ banks and the bank closest to my work refuses to even serve me. They are all the same company but this bank in particular doesn't like to give "change." The first few times I went in to pick up pre-ordered boxes and everything ran smoothly but once when I asked to have the coins in the tray the teller refused to give to me because she "keeps them for an old man." I said "okay no problem I understand. I don't think she liked that I even asked to have them (she probably thought my boxes were enough) and maybe it was my fault but I was getting 1k+ out of that bank per week. Anyways, my main suggestion is - there are plenty of other banks out there... don't fight just get in your car and drive to the next one.

Mr. Schultz, Just call a few branches of your bank & pre-order boxes. Just tell them your are a customer at the bank and would like to place a coin order this week. That should do it. If they ask if you are a business, say no, I am just a customer at the bank. If they say well its only for businesses, say you just need __________ (3 of boxes, denominations) once a month. If they persist, tell them your dad & I every once in a while collect coins together and would like to have ______. Do this at all the banks in your area. You should be on your way. I would also talk nicely to a manager if this conversation script doesnt work.

I think the best advice I heard on this thread was from CRHQueen - don't even bother fighting. I had a bad experience with a manager yesterday, and lost my cool. I had just walked out of another TD Bank with two boxes I didn't even order, and 1 from a BOA, and then heard it about 2 boxes I had pre-ordered. There is plenty of coin out there.

I recognized how "hooked" I am to this hobby when I dont get my coin, or run into these issues. I get pretty mad! Hahaha, give me my coin! I need it! - HH, JJ
PS - I found 8 roosies and a 1968 silver canadian in 5 boxes, so that was worth the trouble yesterday!
