Got my first box of halves today!

Yes I got my first box after reading a bit of everyones adventures. Needless to say I was skunked haha! I plan on taking this box to another bank and trading in for another tomorrow. Very exciting still. Any good advice for halves outside of what was written in the beginners guide?

Oh it seems like just yesterday I was a wide eyed beginner excited about my first box of halves...yeah, that day was a couple weeks ago. I also was skunked and a few weeks later I'm in full swing. Haven't scored a lot of silver but my bank network is pretty nice.mso it's just a matter of time I expect.

You may go through a lot of boxes before your get anything. You read on here about folks opening up boxes and finding rolls with enders stairing them back, but what you don't read about are the 5, 6 or 7 boxes before that one that had only one 40% or nothing at all.

Keep looking and remember the cost of the box that has nothing in it is nothing (well time and travel to your bank but that's it)

Exactly...that was why I thought it would be fun to try. It was going to cost me nothing but travel money and some time well spent. Thanks for the encouragement!

So I took my "skunk" box to a different bank and gathered up what little they had and then hit 3 more banks for their loose and wrapped. All in all I ended up with about 3 dollars loose and 30 wrapped. When I got home I looked at the loose and wham bam got an S haha. The rest was junk but it was worth it I guess. These are 40% right?

Yeah after some research I found out as much. Thank you though for the response! Obviously these are worth something. What is anyones honest opinion on a value for this? I understand it's not graded and all that but just a rough estimate would be great. That way I can atleast convince my wife that I'm not crazy for wanting to look through boxes of already wrapped coins haha.

I'm seeing like $5-$12 online. Does that sound about right?

Idk but make sure you are checking completed listings to get a ruff idea of what it's worth.

Definitely not $12, maybe $5 if you are lucky.

    1989-S half dollar | eBay

If you see the copper stripe on the edge of a proof, it isn't silver. If you don't see it, it is silver.
1/100 of an American dollar is a cent. It is NOT a penny. The word penny is used by several other countries, such as Great Britain, to denote their smallest denomination. In order to be numismatically correct, you must use the term cent to describe the American coin.
