In the mist of my first skunk streak but I found this. It's a 1983 p gold plated(I assume not real gold?) half dollar. I pulled two of these in my last box but this one has the dates 1960 marked over the words in god and the 1980 is over trust. Sorry for the crappy iPhone pic. My question I guess is. Is this something that someone just did for some unknown reason or is this coin some kind of production coin ?

This question comes up almost as frequently as the "Brinks Culling Silver" threads. No big deal, but your find is the result of third-party marketers that produced them and sold them to the public to commemorate Kennedy. Someone on TNet had an image of the advertisement that has been posted before. I believe the cost was $4.95 for chrome-plated half - more for the gold-plated half.

Easy, I've found around a dozen or so of them, can't remember the whole story behind them.
Sorry I cant tell you, you found a valuable coin, when I found my first, I really thought I had something. It is a post-mint thing.
Copyed this from one for sale on e-bay:

STAMPED 1960 & 19801983 is the 20 year anniversary of JFK's death. The reason it is stamped 1960 and 1980 is 1960 would be the year JFK was elected president and 1980 would be the 20 year anniversary of his election.

Thanks for the info. I knew it wasn't worth anything but I was curious as to the story. Thanks!

i don't think brinks culls silver. a week ago i did a brinks box with clear wrappers and thought i had nothing: then i double checked and found a 1947 silver dime sitting in the middle of the roll with a dirty rim.

What the others said about this coin is correct. However, it is likely real gold. Unfortunately, I think it only takes a few micrograms (which I believe is 1/1,000,000 of a gram) to plate a coin.

I found 25 gold-plated halves ($12.50) in a $500 box two days ago. There was no silver and they were customer-wrapped so it was someone else's dump (with Loomis tape over the box). You can sell them on eBay for a small premium though so I'm not sure why someone would dump them.

Most don't care about "small premiums" that's why.

I got this 2003 gold plated half. I found out that it is worth about 50 cents! LOL The others are that days finds. I love the Bicentennial 40%er.
