CC Hunter's CRH Log

Thought I would add one more log to the site in case folks want to see how another CRHer is doing. I'm admittedly a low-volume CRHer of halves. I'll check my change, coin machine reject trays, etc. for other coins worth keeping, but my efforts have been focused on halves. I just started this a little over a month ago, although I've collected coins for much longer.

Here are my results:

Type Amount # Coins 40% 90% Total Ag
Box $500 1000 0 0 0
Loose $2 4 0 0 0
Loose $4 8 0 1 1
Loose $2.50 5 0 0 0
MWR $30 60 0 0 0
Box $500 1000 0 1 1
Loose $0.50 1 0 0 0
MWR $30 60 0 0 0
Loose $6.50 13 0 0 0
MWR $10 20 0 0 0

Totals $1,085 2171 0 2 2

So, two '64 Kennedys to show for my efforts so far. I'm picking up another box this Friday from a different bank. The boxes seem like a lot of effort for little gain these days, so I may focus more on halves that banks have on hand (MWR, CWR, loose); we'll see.

Finished another box over the weekend - yielded two 40%'s ('66 and '67) and some NIFCs I needed for my album. I'll throw back the NIFCs I don't need.

Not a skunk box, but I am still not finding any boxes with the kind of numbers some of the folks here seem to be having. I'll admit I'm jealous! I guess it will just take volume and persistence to find that great box.

Updated totals:

Boxes: 7 $500 boxes searched, 1 90% Kennedy and 6 40% kennedy halves found (the one silver per box average continues!)
MWRs: 13 $10 rolls searched, all skunks
Loose teller halves: $19.50 searched, 1 90% Kennedy half found (I may have forgotten to record some loose halves here and there that I found in small amounts, but they were clad).

Total of $3,650 searched, 2 90% and 6 40% Kennedy halves found.

In addition to a small amount of CWRs (quarters, dimes, pennies) that I searched on Friday without finding anything other than some copper pennies I tucked away, I search two boxes of halves over the weekend. I'm still not anything like a high-volume halves hunter, but I've moved up from one box to week to two. We'll see how it goes. The bankroll isn't a problem, but finding time between work and a family is. I also only have one dump bank and I don't want to lose it. One box yielded a 40%, and the other one 90% (Kennedy) and four 40%s.

Also, I continue to pick up some clad Ikes here and there. Not sure what I'll do with them.

Updated totals:

Boxes: 9 $500 boxes searched, 2 90% Kennedy and 11 40% kennedy halves found (a little over one silver per box on average now)
MWRs: 13 $10 rolls searched, all skunks
Loose teller halves: $26 searched, 1 90% Kennedy half found (I may have failed to record some loose halves here that I found in small amounts, but they were clad, so the totals may be off).

Total of $4,658 searched, 3 90% and 11 40% Kennedy halves found.

Stayed away from the stores on Black Friday and spent a few hours CRHing instead. Other than walking around to a few banks near my office from time to time, this was the first day that I hit a lot of banks in residential areas at one time. Best part about the day is that I took my son along as my partner in crime. He loved going into banks to ask for halves and Ikes. It was a learning experience for him - he thought he hit the jackpot when a teller offered him 20 "gold" dollars for $20 (I told him all about halves but must have forgot to tell him that the "gold" dollars are just worth a buck).

As enjoyable as the day was, we didn't find any silver or much else of value. One branch that hardly ever has halves produced about $200 in MWRs, but they only yielded some NIFCs that I needed for my collection. I was kind of surprised by how bad our results were, but I think there's a lot of CRHers and sniping tellers in the area. Banks were open but CUs were closed. Zero Ikes, which also surprised me.

I'm still jealous of the great success other folks seem to be having with teller trays, CWRs and boxes, but spending a lot of time with my son (with no videogames in sight) was priceless.

Time to update my log and totals. Searched two boxes over the Thanksgiving holiday and a few days this week. I took the train back to skunk city. First box had some NIFCs, second box had absolutely nothing (but no marked coins at all, which is a first for my boxes - odd).

Updated totals:

Boxes: 11 $500 boxes searched, 2 90% Kennedy and 11 40% kennedy halves found (average dropping back to closer to 1 silver per)
MWRs: 35 $10 rolls searched, all skunks
Loose teller halves and CWRs: $86 searched, 1 90% Kennedy half found (I may have failed to record some loose halves here that I found in small amounts, but they were clad, so the totals may be off).

Total of $5,938 searched, 3 90% and 11 40% Kennedy halves found.

Had a small silver shot in the arm on Saturday. After enduring three skunk boxes in a row I picked up 8 MWRs at a bank that sold me 20 MWRs about a week before. Skunked with the first 20 rolls, but out of the 8 MWRs I scored a lone '67. Not much in the scheme of things, but a much needed confidence boost.

Boxes have been skunky lately in a weird way. Not only were they devoid of silver, but there were hardly any marked coins (none in some boxes), no proofs and little or no NIFCs. On the other hand, some regular clad coins were in perfect uncirculated condition. I had become used to seeing a lot of '96s, '95s and '98s in great condition, but for some reason I've been finding a lot of perfect '81s and '01 recently also, and other years, I think. Not worth celebrating, but my Dansco album is looking prettier.

Also been finding a lot more stuff in reject trays and around coin machines. Nothing worth posting a picture of, but I'm building a nice little cigar box collection of world coins. Found two gold-colored dollar coins and gave them to the bank manager for some reason.

Picked up three bicentennial Ikes from a teller tray this morning. Not sure what I'll do with my clad Ikes, but I've only spent a few bucks here and there on them, so will keeping getting them when I see them.

Updated totals:

Boxes: 12 $500 boxes searched, 2 90% Kennedy and 11 40% kennedy halves found (average dropping back to closer to 1 silver per)
MWRs: 43 $10 rolls searched, 1 40%
Loose teller halves and CWRs: $86 searched, 1 90% Kennedy half found (I may have failed to record some loose halves here that I found in small amounts, but they were clad, so the totals may be off).

Total of $5,938 searched, 3 90% and 12 40% Kennedy halves found.

Yes, my boxes and overall numbers suck compared to a lot of folks here. Oh well, I'm not quitting and will pick up my volume.

Updating totals to include last night's box (1 keeper):

Boxes: 13 $500 boxes searched, 2 90% Kennedy and 12 40% kennedy halves found (average dropping back to closer to 1 silver per)
MWRs: 43 $10 rolls searched, 1 40%

Total of $6,438 searched, 3 90% and 13 40% Kennedy halves found.

Placed order with a new supply bank today - will see if my numbers pick up.

Haven't posted to the log in a long time. Thought I would bring it up to date a bit.

For halves, my 2012 totals are as follows:

$8,733 (17,466 coins) searched - 15 40%'s and 5 90%'s found (including one Ben and one Walker).

So far in 2013, my totals for halves are as follows:

$6,894 (13,788 coins) searched - 41 40%'s and 5 90 %'s found (including two Walkers)

I don't do a perfect job of recording all the loose halves I search, but these numbers are close enough.

I'll try to get back on track and give more detailed week-by-week results. I have a couple of boxes of halves on order right now (I don't have the time to do more than 2-3 boxes a week).

Although I mainly stick to halves, I also search CWRs of other coins that two branches set aside for me, but these produced only one Roosie in 2012 and nothing so far in 2013. One coin machine has produced a few silver dimes (Mercs and Roosies) and a few silver quarters (Washingtons) since I started CRHing in the fall of 2012. Other coin machines have produced an abundance of foreign coins and U.S. clad (even one paper dollar), but no silver so far.

Picked up a box of halves last week from the same bank that gave me my best box ever. Was hoping to see the same code stamped on top of the box, but it was a new code that I hadn't see before. All boxes from this bank are the flat String boxes. Total skunk (with lots of marked coins, etc.).

Scored a little foreign and a President dollar coin while dumping halves, but otherwise uneventful.

Picked up a box of halves yesterday (flat String box from Brinks) and finished it today: total skunk, lots of marked coins.

Bought some Peace dollars, a Morgan and a bunch of silver eagles off a seller on Craigslist a couple days ago. The seller threw in the silver eagles for just a little over face (yes, that's right) and they checked out as real.

Sold a bunch of coins today that I did not need for my collection (inculding most of the silver eagles I had just bought) to a buyer off Craigslist. I'm a collector rather than a silver stacker.

Meeting with a couple tomorrow that inherited a bunch of silver and gold coins that they want to sell. Even though I have cash from today's silver sale, I probably will pass on the gold but try to pick up the Ag for a good price.

Met with the nice couple this morning. Passed on the gold coins, and they already had an offer to buy those at spot anyway.

Gave them a fair deal on the silver coins. Got the following for $350. How did I do?

- 10 '64 halves
- 4 40% halves
- 1 standing liberty quarter (worn)
- 10 fairly common Morgans

You did spectacular! Since morgans are like 28-30$ Range. That's 300 alone. Then the first 5 90%'ers pay off the rest. The last 5 90%'ers, 40%s, and standing liberty are profit :-)
I would do that deal in a heartbeat....
Wicka :D

Hey CC, I like gold coins and was just wondering what they had and what they were asking. Just curious. Great score on the silver.

The gold were older European coins. Some Swiss 20 francs and a German 20 marks.

Hey Wicka - I've already mixed them up with my other Morgans. They are included in this pic:

Wish I had some silver porn to post, but no such luck.

Picked up a box of halves this morning (flat String box, from Dunbar, stamped with code I hadn't seen before). Total skunk, not even a clad proof or something interesting like a Balboa. Picked up 4 MWRs from a different branch of the same bank (same yellow and white String rolls), also skunks. So, $540 searched, zilch to show for it. I'm in a bit of a CRH slump. Probably should stick to buying and selling unwanted coin collections.

Was dumping some of the skunks and a bank employee handed me back some halves that didn't drop into the coin machine bag. He told me to give them to the teller rather than putting them in the coin machine since "some people have been asking for those." I am sure those people will appreciate the clad I gave the teller.

Another bank is trying to see if they can order Ikes for me. We'll see, but I'm not holding my breath.

Hope to have some silver porn to show in future posts. Right now I don't have any box orders in and am debating whether I should place orders right now. Am taking a road trip to Georgia next week. Maybe I'll do a little CRHing on the road.

I agree with Sag. If the deal was good, like under $300 for the Swiss franks, I would have grabbed them. I've got ten of the Swiss coins and one 20 mark coin. Love old European gold. I'm working on filling up a nickel tube with French and Swiss twenty franc coins. I think the tube will be about 5 ounces when full.

Sag and Mercury - the people selling the gold already had an offer at melt value, so I didn't feel like topping that.
