I had the day off from work today, so I decided to do a little holiday half dollar shopping tour in the area, with the possibility of some real shopping mixed in if there was time.

End results:

$1623 in halves searched.
28 - 40% silver
2 - 90% silver
37 - 2002-P
47 - 2002-D
6 - 2003-P
9 - 2003-D
8 - 2004-P
7 - 2004-D
28 - 2005-P
27 - 2005-D

Quite a few rolls were all 1999, 2002, and 2005 mixed. (there were well over 80 of the semi rare 1999 date)

Note: only 1 - 40% half dollar in the last $1073

21 Eisenhower dollars.

searched 1 box of nickels.
Nothing special 22 pre-1960 but all common dates.

Also got 2 boxes of pennies which I haven't had time to open yet, maybe tomorrow.

Wow! Thats a ton! I have two stupid questions though. Why do you keep 2002 and up halves, and why do you keep Eisenhower dollars? I'm new to coin roll hunting, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can. Happy Holidays!

I save the 2002 and up halves as well as 1987 or San Francisco minted halves because:
* They were never issued for circulation and only available through mint sets, proof sets, or directly from the mint so their mintage figures are much lower.

I save the Ikes for a couple of reasons:
* I know at least one person who will pay more than a $1 for them (although I haven't sold any yet)
* They were the last of the big dollar coins and although not rare, you usually don't find many of them in circulation so it doesn't cost much.
* Because the interest in them will likely increase next year when the new dollar coins come out and it might be more difficult to get them.

Pictures from 12-22-2006

I finally installed GIMP so I can resize the pictures so they are not too large.

Here are the pictures from 12-22-2006 (same coins, different perspective).

The top two rows are all 2002-2005 in order.
* The top row is all philadelphia minted.
* The second row is all denver minted.

The third row is the two 1964's.

The bottom two rows are the 40% halves.

Oh and I forgot to mention the Ikes up in the upper right hand corner.

sorry about the image size, looks like I still need a little work on the resize process.

Maybe next time.
